The guide explains that some near-infrared saunas use high-wattage incandescent heat lamps close to the body, producing broad-spectrum light and radiant warmth within moments of switching on, while far-infrared saunas use carbon or ceramic panels around the enclosure that need time to warm. Near-infrared wavelengths fall within what a 2012 review in the Annals of Biomedical Engineering calls an optical window of roughly 600 to 1,070 nanometers, where a portion of the light passes below the skin surface. Far-infrared energy is absorbed mostly by water in superficial tissue and converted to heat.

The most widely repeated claim in the category, that far-infrared waves penetrate 3 to 4 centimeters into the body, was tested directly in 2025. Researchers at the University of Oregon, publishing in the Journal of Applied Physiology, measured thigh muscle temperature at three depths during a 45-minute session in a commercially available far-infrared sauna. The paper states there is a lack of data supporting the 3 to 4 centimeter figure. It found the effective thermal penetration to be about 2.4 centimeters, with heating negligible beyond roughly 3.8 centimeters and no change in core temperature. The authors concluded the warming came from a combination of radiant and conductive heating. The guide uses that finding to separate two ideas buyers often conflate: heat can travel deeper than the photons that created it, so deep-tissue warmth is not evidence that the light reached that depth.

A second section addresses near-infrared LEDs. A small LED device and a high-powered incandescent heat lamp can emit the same wavelength, and at the same wavelength tissue responds the same way. What differs is the energy delivered: irradiance at the skin, total radiant power, distance, illuminated area, exposure time, and thermal output. The guide advises buyers to ask for irradiance measured at the actual distance rather than an LED count.

"Near infrared and far infrared are not competing strengths of the same heat," the guide states. "Neither is accurately described by a single penetration-depth number."

On EMF, the guide notes that the electric and magnetic fields buyers worry about come from wiring, heaters, transformers, and controllers, and depend on how a specific sauna is engineered rather than on which infrared band it produces. It recommends requesting model-specific measurements that state the units, the distance from the heaters, and whether the sauna was running at full power.

The guide closes with a comparison checklist covering wavelength range, emitter type, spectrum, irradiance, distance, exposed body area, warm-up time, operating temperature, interior space, electrical requirements, EMF measurements, materials, replacement parts, and warranty, and describes which buyers each format suits.
