Northampton computer repair company warns of the consequences of losing customer data as the new GDPR law is due to come into place soon.

Northampton, United Kingdom - January 24, 2018 /PressCable/ —
Northampton businesses could face public humiliation and huge fines for losing valuable data – if one of their employees does something as simple as lose their mobile phone.
That’s the warning from Peter Ravi, owner of local IT support and computer repair company, Proactive IT Support Ltd. https://fastproactiveit.com/
“It’s all because of a trend called Bring Your Own Device, or BYOD,” explained Peter.
“Most businesses round here let their staff access company data using their own phone, and sometimes their own iPad or laptop. But the business’s boss remains liable for protecting company data.”
“And if a device is lost without adequate protection, it can mean your data is open anyone.”
“Letting staff use their own mobile devices or computers for work might seem more convenient and cost effective initially but in the long term it has its own problems. Experience has shown that personal computers are not as well virus protected as company computers and tend to have excessive and unnecessary applications loaded. Many of these non work applications could introduce a security risk if the device is attached to a company network allowing for the spread of viruses and data corruption. This practice is not allowed in most larger and blue-chip companies.”
Peter added: “From May this year there are new GDPR data laws coming in. The loss of an employee’s mobile phone with company data would have to be reported to the Information Commissioner.
“That loss of data would sit in the public record. People Googling your business might see your data loss before they even get to your website. There are also big potential fines.”
Peter has written a free guide on the subject. It explores the six BYOD data security areas to be most concerned about… and what to do to mitigate them.
