Little Beakers Releases Parent Guide to Hands-On Science for Kids

Little Beakers, a hands-on science lab with five locations in Texas and Utah, has published a guide for parents that draws on active-learning research and a chemist's bench experience to show how children build science skills by doing experiments.

Dr. Cinttya Morgan, the company's founder and lead scientist, wrote the guide. She is a military and aerospace chemist whose work centers on materials chemistry and polymer engineering. Morgan started Little Beakers on a simple conviction: any child, from any background, should be able to walk into a real lab, use real equipment, and get inspired.

Research behind the approach

Education research has leaned toward active, hands-on instruction for years, and the guide draws on that work. Its main source is a meta-analysis of 225 studies published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Active learning raised exam performance by about 6%. Students in traditional lecture classes were roughly 1.5 times more likely to fail.

A second study, from 2024, tested hands-on activities with preschoolers in a controlled setting. Science motivation rose in children as young as 5, for girls and boys alike. The guide pairs that finding with a 2009 National Academies report, "Learning Science in Informal Environments," which found that children learn real science in places like science centers and during family activities, not only in school.

For Morgan, the research matches what she has watched thousands of children do at Little Beakers lab benches. "The moment a child runs their own reaction, their question changes," she writes. A child who starts out asking "What is that?" soon asks "What happens if…?" That second question, she writes, is science.

What the guide covers

The guide's core is a routine Morgan calls a four-beat loop. Children predict what will happen, run the test, look closely at the result, and write it down. According to the guide, prediction is the step most families skip, and it separates an experiment from a show.

The guide includes kitchen-table activities, such as baking soda and vinegar reactions run with one amount changed each time. A four-week home plan ends with a lab visit. One section follows a single polymer experiment as it is adjusted for children at ages 4, 9 and 14.

Home science has limits, and the guide names them. Lab equipment is costly for one family. Dissection specimens are hard to manage at a kitchen table. And children learn from comparing results with other kids at the bench.

Homeschooled children alone make up more than 3% of U.S. students, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. The guide notes that those families face the same question as public and private school families: where can a child actually do science, not just read about it?
