Identifying the Seven Wastes

Setup Time Reduction (SMED)
Single-Minute Exchange of Die (SMED) methodology has dramatically reduced our SMT line changeover times. What once took 60 minutes now averages under 15 minutes for complex changeovers. Key improvements include standardized fixture mounting, offline feeder preparation, visual setup guides, and parallel operations where internal tasks are converted to external (done while the line is still running).
5S Workplace Organization
The foundation of lean is an organized, disciplined workplace. Our 5S program includes sort (remove unneeded items), set in order (designated locations for everything), shine (clean and inspect), standardize (replicable practices across shifts), and sustain (audit and maintain). Regular 5S audits score each work area, with results linked to team performance metrics.
Visual Management
We use visual controls to make abnormal conditions immediately obvious. Andon lights show line status at a glance. Color-coded floor markings define material and pedestrian zones. Production status boards display actual vs. planned output. Quality dashboards show real-time yield and defect trends. Anyone can see whether we are on track or need attention.
