FarmPages Connects Producers With Farm Building Suppliers as 2027 Barn, Shop and Machine Storage Projects Move Into Winter Planning

Oct 28, 2026

FarmPages is directing farmers to its farm building supplier listings as producers plan 2027 barn, shop and machine storage projects during the winter months.

Winnipeg, Canada, October 28, 2026 -- With 51 suppliers in its Farm Buildings section and province pages for Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, FarmPages is helping farmers compare post-frame, steel, fabric and laminated rafter builders and line up quotes before spring.

Winnipeg, Canada — As the field season winds down and producers start sketching the barns, shops, machinery storage and livestock housing they want standing in 2027, FarmPages is pointing them to the farm building suppliers listed in its North American agri-business directory. The Farm Buildings subcategory on FarmPages.com lists 51 suppliers, and the wider Buildings & Accessories category lists 78, giving farmers one place to compare builders and dealers before the spring rush.

According to FarmPages, the months between freeze-up and seeding are when the slow work behind a farm building gets done. To firm up a price on a machine shed or calving barn, a supplier usually needs a site plan, engineered drawings for local snow and wind loads, a foundation design and door sizes. Steel packages, trusses and wide doors carry lead times that vary by supplier and season, and erection crews covering big territories fill their calendars early. A producer who waits for the snow to melt may find the first open slot lands in the middle of haying.

Permits are the other reason to start early. Under Saskatchewan's Construction Codes Act, in force since January 1, 2022, buildings that house livestock, store crops and feed, or store and maintain farm machinery remain exempt from provincial construction standards. Farm residences no longer count as farm buildings, though, and a local authority can still use its building bylaw to require permits.

Manitoba draws its line by size. Farm buildings under 600 square metres and three storeys remain unregulated under the Manitoba Building Code, while larger ones fall under the code and need a building permit. A 60-by-120-foot machine shed is roughly 670 square metres, so ordinary projects cross that line. The 2020 National Building Code, which Manitoba has enforced since January 1, 2024, includes the first major update for large farm buildings since 1995. Rules also vary by municipality, so FarmPages suggests calling the RM or county office before drawings are final.

Comparing Structure Types Before Asking for Prices

The building listings cover the structure types producers usually compare. Post-frame construction grew out of the pole barns of the 1930s, and its straight walls are easy to insulate and finish, so it turns up often in shops and livestock barns. Pre-engineered steel, with tall sidewalls and wide clear spans, suits machine storage. Fabric and Quonset-style arch buildings give covered space for hay, feed and equipment. Laminated rafters open up a clear-span interior, and insulated panels matter once a shop has to stay heated through January.

Listed suppliers include AFAB Industries of Rocanville, Saskatchewan; Svenska Builders of Saskatoon, which supplies pre-engineered steel buildings; Prairie Post Frame of Brandon, Manitoba, which builds post-frame agricultural and commercial buildings; Northern Steel Buildings of Morden, Manitoba; and Dueck's Laminated Rafters of Rosenort, Manitoba, which makes laminated arch rafters. Farther east are Britespan Buildings of Wingham, Ontario, a fabric building company; Calhoun Super Structure of Tara, Ontario; and Harnois Industries / MegaDome of Quebec, which produces steel fabric structures.

Closer to home, FarmPages has province pages for building suppliers in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The page for farm building suppliers in Saskatchewan lists the province's suppliers, each linked to its listing, with a checklist that runs from snow and wind engineering and foundations for clay soil to erection costs and written warranties. Its FAQ covers permits, machine shed door sizes and whether screw piles make a sound foundation.

Questions to Put to Every Supplier

FarmPages suggests asking every supplier the same questions so the quotes line up. Does the price include engineered drawings, or only the building package? Who handles the foundation, be it a concrete pad, posts or screw piles? Is erection included, and what travel charges apply to a yard several hours away? Has the main door been sized for the next combine or sprayer in transport position, not the one parked in the yard today? The Saskatchewan page also flags quotes that look cheap because they assume a lower snow load or leave out erection, doors or concrete.

Livestock housing adds its own questions. A calving barn needs ventilation that keeps moisture from building up once the doors are shut for winter, pens and alleys laid out around how cows and calves are moved, and water lines that keep running at minus 30. In-floor heat for a shop has to be planned before the slab is poured. Warranty terms on panels, fabric covers and doors differ by manufacturer, and FarmPages recommends getting them in writing.

Why Early Comparison Pays Off

Starting early also leaves room to weigh trade-offs, the company says. A builder two hours away may already have a crew in the district, while a manufacturer in another province may offer a structure type no local outfit carries. Winter leaves time to check references and look at a building the supplier put up a few years ago. The thaw has its own timing catch: Manitoba's spring road restrictions, which limit allowable axle weights on listed highways, can begin as early as March 1 and may complicate heavy deliveries of gravel, concrete or steel.

For farms still deciding what to build, FarmPages has published buyer guides that compare Quonset huts with pole barns on cost, durability and snow load, and weigh pole barn kits against custom builds. Settling the structure type and delivery approach first means the quotes that come back describe roughly the same building.

FarmPages is a directory. It does not sell buildings, set prices, or rate or vouch for the suppliers it lists. Producers use it to find companies that serve their area and contact them directly. The site is the online home of The Book, the annual print directory that has served farmers and agribusinesses since 1978.
