“Be Kind, Be You” Says Former Britain’s Got Talent Finalist Asanda Jezile

Apr 21, 2020

Former Britain’s Got Talent finalist, Asanda Jezile, is encouraging fans to ‘be kind’ as she launches her debut single.

April 21, 2020 / / —

After receiving rave reviews throughout the auditions on ITV’s hit show, Britain’s Got Talent, 11-year old Asanda Jezile made it to the live grand final. The televised event attracted an audience of over 13 million people. Seven years later, the singing sensation is releasing her debut single, ‘Photogenic.’

Asanda, now 18, cites British urban music powerhouses Stormzy and Steff London as her inspiration. She is hoping to follow in their footsteps and use her music to create a soundtrack for young people. Her self-confidence fuelled lyrics are powerful and they are designed to encourage listeners to feel confident and to respect each other at a time when the ‘be kind’ message has never been more relevant.

Speaking about her debut track, Asanda said, “We love to capture every moment of our life and look back through the memories in years to come. We all want to look good on the outside, but being photogenic is about inner beauty and confidence as well. In today’s world of social media, you have to be confident in yourself as there’s so much negativity and judgement online.”

Asanda is no stranger to controversy or criticism. During her time on Britain’s Got Talent, her performances received mixed reviews and some viewers were outspoken in their opinions of her cover of Rhianna’s iconic single, ‘Diamonds’. Some felt the performance was too mature given her age, despite the judging panel praising her talent. Asanda refused to let negativity stop her, and she continued to impress with a series of show-stopping renditions. The 11-year-old made it through to the final, a feat achieved by few so young. After dazzling TV audiences, she went on to perform with a host of chart-topping stars, including Nicole Scherzinger, Ricky Martin and Little Mix.

Asanda’s talent show experiences inspired her to write ‘Photogenic.’ Talking about the single, the ambitious singer said, “I had a lot of negative comments after my BGT performance, but I was just being real. At the time ‘Diamonds’ was one of my favourite songs, and Rihanna is an artist who I truly respect, so why wouldn’t I want to perform it on national TV? I totally understand why some people may have thought that I was pushed into singing that song by the TV company, but the negativity taught me that even if you do the right thing you’ll never be able to please everyone. ‘Photogenic’ is my way of saying “this is me, I don’t care what you think, I’m proud and I’m confident of who I am, I hope you like it, but if you don’t -that’s fine too.”

At a time when the world is still reeling from the tragic loss of TV presenter Caroline Flack, Asanda is keen to use her voice. She said, “There is so much negativity online, but it’s just people’s opinions. When you read something about you it can be really hurtful. So with this song being about confidence and being ‘photogenic’ I hope that it gives everyone who is on the receiving end of any online negativity a little bit of extra strength.”

With the single ‘Photogenic’ now available on all major platforms, Asanda is planning to visit schools as part of a nationwide programme to raise awareness of cyberbullying and online safety.
