Egypt says archaeologists find ancient tombs in Nile Delta

Jan 24, 2019

CAIRO — Egypt says archaeologists have uncovered ancient tombs dating back to the Second Intermediate Period, 1782-1570 B.C., in the Nile Delta. The Antiquities Ministry said Wednesday that archaeologists also found 20 burial sites dating back to the Predynastic Period in Kom al-Kholgan archaeological site, about 140 kilometers (87 miles) north of Cairo. Mostafa Waziri, secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, says the tombs contain ancient animal remains, stone artifacts and pottery fragments with drawings. The ministry says the remains were not well-preserved. In recent years, Egypt has heavily promoted new archaeological finds to international media and diplomats...

CAIRO — Egypt says archaeologists have uncovered two ancient tombs dating back to the Roman period in the country's Western Desert. The Antiquities Ministry says Tuesday the excavations took place in the Beir Al-Shaghala archaeological site in the Dakhla Oasis. Mostafa Waziri, secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, says the tombs were built in mud-brick with different architectural styles. He says archaeologists uncovered ancient human remains and pottery fragments inside the tombs. They also found colorful funeral paintings on the walls of both tombs. In recent years, Egypt has heavily promoted new archaeological finds to international media and...

Dozens feared dead in Nigeria as leaking oil tanker explodes

Jan 24, 2019

LAGOS, Nigeria — An overturned oil tanker exploded in Nigeria while dozens of people were scooping up the leaking fuel and many were killed, police and witnesses said Saturday. Hundreds of people have died in similar accidents in recent years in Nigeria, Africa's largest oil producer, as impoverished people risk their lives to collect fuel leaking from pipelines or trucks. "We have recovered 12 corpses and taken 22 persons with serious burns to hospital," police spokeswoman Irene Ugbo told The Associated Press. She said the blast occurred Friday evening in Odukpani in Cross River state in the southeast. But some...

Congo says healthy baby born to mom who recovered from Ebola

Jan 24, 2019

JOHANNESBURG — A four-day-old baby is a surprise bright spot in Congo's deadly Ebola outbreak, as the country's health ministry on Thursday called her the first child born to a mother who has recovered from the virus. "Baby Sylvana" is healthy and does not have Ebola, the health ministry said. It tweeted a photo of the baby, her tiny mouth open in yawn or cry, in her smiling mother's arms. The baby is the first in this outbreak born to a mother who recovered, the health ministry said. This is rare, though babies have been born to Ebola survivors in...

For Ghana e-waste recyclers, a safer option amid toxic fumes

Jan 24, 2019

ACCRA, Ghana — On any given day, plumes of noxious smoke rise above the Agbogbloshie dump site in Ghana's capital, Accra. The billowing black smoke comes from the many informal e-waste recyclers who take unwanted electronics, strip them of their cables and burn away the protective covers to reach the valuable copper beneath. It's a dangerous way to make a living, but an easily available one for the many unskilled workers arriving in search of money to get by. Ghana imports about 150,000 tons of secondhand electronics a year, according to a 2011 study coordinated under the Basel Convention, a...
