Ebola vaccinations begin in Congo's latest deadly outbreak

Aug 15, 2018

DAKAR, Senegal — Ebola vaccinations began Wednesday for Congo's latest outbreak of the deadly virus that has already claimed at least nine lives. Health officials have warned that containing the outbreak in North Kivu province is complicated by the presence of multiple armed groups vying for mineral-rich land in the northeastern region that borders Uganda and Rwanda. Ebola screening of travelers at the Congo-Rwanda border was "already in high gear," the World Health Organization said. The latest outbreak, declared Aug. 1 in Mangina village in the Mabalako health zone, is Congo's tenth outbreak since the virus was identified in 1976....

The total eclipse lasts 1 hour and 43 minutes, with the entire event lasting closer to four hours. Across Africa, people turned to the sky, watching the reddish shadow slide up the moon's surface. In Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, hundreds of...

Aug 15, 2018

DARLING, South Africa — A South African brewery is said to be the first in Africa to go carbon-neutral as more businesses across the continent adjust to climate change, and as consumers become more careful about the products they buy. Darling Brewery, in a village near Cape Town, decreased its carbon footprint by using water and energy more efficiently — then brought it to zero in April by purchasing carbon credits at a reforestation project in Zimbabwe. The brewery's overhaul comes as South Africa's Cape region emerges from an extreme drought that saw the city of Cape Town, population 4...

CAIRO — Archaeologists in Egypt have discovered an ancient pottery manufacturing workshop dating to more than 4,000 years ago in the southern province of Aswan, the Antiquities Ministry said Thursday.
