Nigeria's Boko Haram extremists hamper polio eradication

Apr 23, 2018

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria — Islamic extremists made Imana Alhaji Gana's village in northeastern Nigeria too dangerous for health workers to vaccinate against polio. Now that she and her family have fled to a displacement camp, those workers want to catch her children in time. Here in the camps housing thousands of families seeking safety from the extremists, health teams are going from tent to tent, inoculating youngsters against the disease that withers limbs and disables children for life. At first, Gana is afraid to let the outreach workers vaccinate her baby. Eventually they persuade her that the three-week-old child is not...

It says excavation is still underway at the site, near the Siwa oasis and the border with Libya. Head archaeologist Abdel-Aziz al-Demiri says statues depicting a man and lions, as well as pottery fragments and coins, were also found at the site. A new concern for African vultures: bullet lead in carrion

Apr 23, 2018

JOHANNESBURG — Poaching, poisoning and other hazards have taken a heavy toll on Africa's endangered vultures. New research suggests that the scavengers also face another threat — toxic bullet lead that they ingest while eating the carcasses of animals shot by legal hunters. One-third of nearly 600 white-backed vultures caught and tested in Botswana had "elevated levels" of lead in their blood, and higher lead concentrations were found in vultures during the hunting season and in hunting areas, according to a study published last month in the Science of the Total Environment journal. African vultures are in peril from livestock...

Egypt begins voting for president, with el-Sissi assured win

Apr 23, 2018

CAIRO — Egyptians began voting Monday in an election that virtually guaranteed another term for President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, who faced only a token opponent in balloting that resembled the referendums held by autocrats for decades before the Arab Spring briefly raised hopes of democratic change. El-Sissi's only challenger was Moussa Mustafa Moussa, a little-known politician who joined the race at the last minute to spare the government the embarrassment of a one-candidate election after several hopefuls were forced out or arrested. Authorities hope enough of Egypt's nearly 60 million eligible voters will participate in the three-day election to give it...
